Dark Sky
Experience the magic of Ullswater after dark, where clear skies and peaceful surroundings create the perfect setting for stargazing.
Away from the bright lights of towns and cities, The Quiet Site is a wonderful place to enjoy the beauty of the night sky.
Experience the night sky
As dusk settles over Ullswater, The Quiet Site transforms into one of the Lake District’s most magical destinations. With minimal light pollution and a commitment to preserving natural darkness, the night sky above opens into a vast, glittering panorama few places can match.
On a clear night, you might see:
The Milky Way arching gracefully over the fells
Shooting stars and meteor showers
Saturn and its rings through a small telescope
Countless constellations, bright and easy to spot
And if fortune smiles, the Northern Lights may even dance across the horizon.
Grab a blanket, step outside your Glamping Cabin, Hobbit Hole, Gingerbread House, Camping Pod, or touring unit, and let the universe perform its quiet magic. We regularly enjoy aurora displays — the show in May 2024 was unforgettable.

Stargazing Tips
- Aim for nights around the new moon; moonlight is beautiful but can outshine fainter stars
- Take a camping chair or blanket to lie on and stay comfortable
- On chilly nights, wrap up warm and enjoy a flask of hot chocolate
- Allow your eyes 10-20 minutes to adjust to the dark for the best visibility
- Relax and enjoy the calm and tranquillity while observing the universe
- Consider downloading a stargazing app to identify stars and constellations. Remember to reduce your phone brightness to protect your night vision
